From the youngest white belt at age five, to our oldest Black Belt over 80 years old,

Ryu Shu Kan is also the recipient of the Brookhaven Volunteer Services award in recognition of our many years of committment and dedication to the youth of the Sachem, Farmingville, and neighboring communites.




About RYU SHU KAN: Japanese Arts Center in Sachem / Farmingville



Ryu Shu Kan, founded in 1984 is a traditional Okinawan Dojo in both atmosphere and method of training and is equipped with all the training equipment necessary for a student's karate journey.


Gerard & Hiroko Uraga-Senese are the Owners of the Ryu Shu Kan of Sachem / Farmingville, and also Directors of the Japan Center at Stony Brook University's Community Outreach Programs. Gerard is also the founder of the Town of Brookhaven’s Sachem Community Youth Services’ Children’s Karate Program (started in 1990).​

Gerard Senese, Kyoshi-Chief Instructor at Ryu Shu Kan in Sachem / Farmingville is an 8th Degree Black Belt and has been teaching children how to better themselves through his Ryu Shu Kan Karate program for more than 45 years.


We instill in the students the “Five Reasons to practice Karate”:

Our Tai Chi classes start with “Chi Kung” (moving the Chi) exercises which helps warm up all the joints, tendons and ligaments in a series of arm and hip rotations, slow moving knee and back bends and standing full body stretches.

We then move on to our Tai Chi forms:

“Nai Han Chi” – An earth energy/grounding form which incorporates low stances to draw energy from the earth and transfer it to our bodies along with balancing stances to strengthen our legs and free flowing arm movements to move our Chi and strengthen our shoulders.

"Yang Style Enhanced Form": The Yang Style 24 Form in an enhanced technical level to fully experience the full range of Tai Chi Postures.

Getting Started in Fitness Classes

Learn the basics of how to swing & hit with the ‘Bachi’ (taiko drumstick), different rhythms used in Taiko pieces, and the unique movements and choreography of Taiko. Join our performance group and learn both traditional works and contemporary ones combining Taiko drumming with Martial Arts, and Japanese Folk Dance for an exciting presentation that will entertain, enthrall, and enrich all who experience the power of the Taiko Drums of Japan!

Ikebana (KADO) & Sho-Do




Hiroko received her Ikebana "Shihan"-teaching license in 1985 in the prestigious Misho-Ryu Style of Ikebana while living in Osaka, Japan.

Ka-Do & Sho-Do are two of the Japanese Cultural Arts offered in private and group lessons here at the RyuShuKan.
These Arts have succeeded in transcending the utilitarian aspects of flower arranging and brush writing, and have developed into ZEN arts which integrate body, mind and spirit. The names of these arts end in ‘Do’ meaning ‘the Way or Path’ which denotes a life-long journey of self-discovery through the pursuit of these arts.

Hiroko received her Sho-Do (brush calligraphy) teaching certificate in 1998 from the All -Japan Calligraphy Association, Nihon Shuji, based in Kyoto, Japan.
